Turkmenistan has proposed to establish a UN Regional Centre for Disarmament in Asia.

This proposal was made during the talks held between Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on June 13.

Addressing the press conference held after the bilateral talks, the Turkmen president said the two sides paid special attention to the situation in Afghanistan.

Turkmenistan once again stressed its interest in resolving the whole range of Afghanistan-related issued only through peaceful, political and diplomatic means.

Berdymukhamedov and Ban Ki-moon also emphasized the importance of cooperative efforts to address such an urgent issue as non-proliferation and strengthening of disarmament processes in Central Asia.

Berdymukhamedov noted that the implementation of the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia is of great importance.

Turkmenistan stands ready to actively cooperate with the UN Office of Disarmament Affairs in implementing a number of initiatives in this field. In this regard, Ashgabat has put forward the initiative to establish the UN Regional Centre for Disarmament in Asia.

Turkmenistan has a long border with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries regularly host events in the border security sphere under the auspices of the UN.

This Central Asian state provides real assistance to Afghanistan by supplying electricity and liquefied petroleum gas, constructing industrial and social facilities, and regularly providing humanitarian aid to the Afghan population.
