OSCE High Commissioner concerned about wiring in Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone
OSCE High Commissioner Knut Vollebæk visited villages located in the zone of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict on June 20.
He got acquainted with the situation in the villages near the so-called border with South Ossetia.
Vollebaek visited the villages of Ditsi and Khurvaleti and expressed concern about the situation. He called upon responsible persons to promptly respond to the situation.
"This morning I visited Ditsi and Khurvaleti. I am concerned about the establishment of the barbed wire. This has had a negative impact on the population living there. I call upon all who are responsible for such incidents, to respond immediately to what is happening in order to ensure that this will not happen again," the High Commissioner said.
Large scale military actions were launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
