Turkey’s decision on daylight saving helps to economize

By Nigar Abbasova
The government of Turkey, which in 2016 decided to remain on summer time permanently, has managed to save a significant sum.
Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak said that the country economized nearly 1 billion lira ($ 260 million), mentioning that the decision was taken basing on results of a scientific analysis carried out by Istanbul Technical University.
In October, 2016 the Turkish government nullified the practice of moving clocks back an hour, adding another hour of difference between Turkey and Europe, but putting the country in the same time zone as Mecca and Medina.
Then the government expected to save up to 2.5 billion lira ($650 million) in electricity consumption or roughly 8 percent of the electricity that would be consumed during the five-month period.
Daylight saving time strategy allows to make better use of daylight and conserve energy by means of advancing clocks by one hour so that evening daylight lasts an hour longer.
