Azerbaijan’s Day of Armed Forces marked in London

The Day of Armed Forces of Azerbaijan was marked in the capital of United Kingdom, London.

The office of the Military Attaché within Azerbaijani embassy in UK organized an official ceremony to mark the 96th anniversary of the establishment of Azerbaijan's Armed Forces, Azerbaijani embassy in UK said.

The ceremony was attended by UK Minister for International Security Strategy, Andrew Murrison, Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff, James Everard, generals and officials of the UK Ministry of Defense, members of the House of Lords and the Parliament, ambassadors and military attaches of several countries accredited to London, members of the Azerbaijani community in this country and other guests.

Azerbaijan's ambassador to UK, Fakhraddin Gurbanov provided the audience with an insight into the history of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces. He said Azerbaijani army today has turned into the most powerful army in the region, as a result of the measures taken after the country gained independence.

Also speaking at the event, the military attaché of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, Lieutenant-Colonel Vugar Ahmadov said Azerbaijani possess an army that currently is capable to restore the territorial integrity of the country.

He noted that 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory is currently under Armenian occupation and 80 percent of the Azerbaijani forces are serving on the frontline.

Ahmadov said Armenia's occupation is a serious threat not only to the region but also the world.

He added that the Azerbaijani army has contributed to the international security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area and will do so in future.

Ahmadov further spoke about the development of Azerbaijan - UK relations.

Murrison expressed satisfaction with the expanding dynamic development in various fields between Azerbaijan and UK.

He highly appreciated Azerbaijan for the country's significant contribution to the international security, especially its role in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan and sharing its air space to use for this purpose.

The ceremony featured symphonic works by Azerbaijani composers and videos about the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.

The history of the modern Azerbaijani army dates back to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in the early 20th century. The Armed Forces of the Azerbaijan Republic were created on June 26, 1918 to protect the country from the military aggressions of Armenia and Russia.

The Azerbaijani army is a professional and the most powerful army in the South Caucasus region. The skills and combat readiness of the Azerbaijani army are growing year on year. The army's building process is progressing very well.
