UK parliament hosts annual event of Anglo-Azerbaijani Society

The "Churchill" room of the UK House of Commons hosted the traditional annual event of the Anglo-Azerbaijani Society on December 6.

The event was attended by co-chair of the Anglo-Azerbaijani society, Nargiz Pashayeva, acting co-chair Kenneth Forest, Azerbaijan's ambassador to the UK Fakhraddin Gurbanov as well as representatives of foreign countries and public.

Forest spoke about the activity of the Anglo-Azerbaijani society, and the progress achieved during the year. He also expressed his confidence that the Anglo-Azerbaijani Society would continue its efforts to expand cultural and humanitarian ties between the countries.

Speaking at the event, Pashayeva remembered late co-chair Lord Fraser, saying he was was a true friend of Azerbaijan, who contributed to development of cultural and humanitarian ties between the two countries and peoples.

Pashayeva provided an insight into the history of the society and its projects. She said the Society had brought to fruition a number of successful humanitarian, social, cultural projects in both Azerbaijan and UK.

Gurbanov spoke of late co-chair Fraser who always paid special attention to such events. He hailed Fraser`s work as a co-chair, in particular, his contribution to the cultural and humanitarian ties between the countries. He noted the Society established a memorial fund, adding it will be helpful for the youth in Azerbaijan and UK.

Gurbanov gave a background of the projects implemented together by the Anglo-Azerbaijani Society and the Azerbaijani Embassy, saying the diplomatic mission will continue to support the Society down the road.

Following, young Azerbaijani violinist Nazrin Rahisova performed world renowned compositions.

The Anglo-Azerbaijani Society is the principal organization drawing together the cultural, charitable and other links between Azerbaijan and the UK.

Established in 1997, the society supports Azerbaijani-British relations in all spheres and assists charitable endeavors in Azerbaijan, as well as keeps members closely informed on the developments in Azerbaijan and increases public awareness about Azerbaijan in the UK.

The membership comprises major British companies in the oil, banking, insurance, engineering, services, communications, law and other sectors.

Azerbaijan and the UK have benefitted from close bilateral partnership and cooperation since 1992 in the framework of international organizations such as the United Nations, OSCE, Council of Europe, and NATO.
