Stockholm hosts conference on Nobel brothers' heritage

By Nazrin Gadimova

The 2nd international scientific and innovation conference on the heritage of the Nobel brothers was held in Stockholm on September 13-14.

The overall purpose of the conference was to increase the understanding of successful technical as well as social and socio-economic innovations. The conference focused on issues such as the relationship inside the triangle of Rockefeller, the Rothschild family and the Nobels.

Such topics as the economic and social heritage of the activity of the Nobel brothers in Baku in the 19th and 20th centuries and the business model of the Petroleum Production Company Nobel Brothers, or BraNobel, were discussed at the event.

The discussions covered the geopolitical realities during the first oil boom in Baku, as well as the consequences of BraNobel nationalization for the world oil industry.

The event brought together leading scholars and researchers involved in the study of the life and work of the Nobel brothers, geopolitics experts, former heads of state and government, as well as representatives of the business elite of the Swedish capital. Representatives of the Nobel family were closely involved in holding the event as well.

The partners of the conference were international institutions such as the Nobel Family Society, the Nobel Museum in Stockholm, Centre for Business History in Stockholm, Baku Nobel Heritage Fund, Nobel International Fraternity, National Historical Archive of Azerbaijan, National Archives of Georgia and Nobel Brothers Batumi Technological Museum. The Azerbaijani state oil company, SOCAR, was one of the sponsors of the conference.

The tradition of holding such conferences emerged in Baku in October 2012 when the 1st international scientific and innovation conference took place.

The Petroleum Production Company Nobel Brothers Limited, or Branobel, was an oil-producing company set up by Ludvig Nobel and Baron Peter von Bilderling in Baku in 1876. About 12 percent of the money designated to establish the Nobel Prize by Alfred Nobel came from his shares in the company.
