Israel bans official visits to Caspian states over security
Visits by Israeli government officials to the southern CIS republics, particularly, the Caspian littoral states, have been banned on orders from the country’s security agency, the IzRus news portal reported.
Representatives of cabinet ministries and employees of state-run companies are not allowed to travel to these countries for security considerations. Working visits scheduled for last weekend and this week were therefore cancelled, the report said.
Israeli diplomats have come under terrorist attacks in India, Georgia and Thailand this week. The terror act in Georgia was thwarted.
Israel accused Iran and Hezbollah of being behind the bomb attacks targeting Israeli embassy staff in India and Georgia. Iran denied involvement.
In Azerbaijan, law enforcement agencies said in mid-January they had seized two Azerbaijani nationals who reportedly planned terror attacks on Israeli citizens in Baku, which were ordered by a resident of Iran who has connections with the Iranian secret service.
Tensions between Iran and its arch-foe Israel are on the rise over Iran's nuclear research program, which the West fears aims to produce nuclear weapons, an accusation Tehran denies.
