Iran welcomes one million Azerbaijani tourists in 2012

About one million Azerbaijani citizens have traveled to Iran during the last Solar year (which ended on March 21), Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mohsen Pak Ayin said, IRINN TV channel reported.

Iran plans to boost close economic relations with Azerbaijan, as 4 provinces of Iran have common borders with Azerbaijan, he added.

Pak Ayin stated that border trade zones and 7 border crossing points help to expand bilateral relations.

"Iran unilaterally has abolished the visa regime for Azerbaijani citizens. The Azerbaijan government is also interested in abolishing the visa regime for Iranians, however this will not happen until Azerbaijan launches a digital system at its border checkpoints," he said. He also hoped Aslanduz and Azadlu border crossing points will open in the near future. The opening of the checkpoints would reinforce Iran-Azerbaijan relations and the economic well-being of people living in the border area.

There are seven border crossings on the Azerbaijani-Iranian border. At present, five of them - Julfa, Shakhtahti, Astara, Bilasuvar and Imishli checkpoints are operating. Aslanduz customs point has not been operating for a long time.

Construction of the Azadlu Custom checkpoint had been discussed and agreed before during the Iran's cabinet visit to the Ardabil province.
