British ambassador praises Azerbaijan’s role in EITI
Azerbaijan as a pioneer country sequentially applying the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) can be proud of the role it is playing in this initiative, British Ambassador Peter Bateman has said.
"Azerbaijan has a positive track record of its involvement in EITI," Bateman said at a conference, "EITI and Beyond: View from Azerbaijan", on Friday.
According to him, to date a lot of achievements have been made within this initiative.
Bateman said that the conference's aims include exploring ways to improve and strengthen the EITI mechanism, expanding the cooperation between the countries involved in the initiative and international organizations, as well as holding information exchanges.
Bateman also stressed that the UK was ready to actively support the further development of EITI.
The Azerbaijani government assumed a commitment to join EITI in London in June 2003. In February 2009, it became the first country among 25 bidding states to pass the validation process and achieve the status of its full-fledged member.
To date, the memorandum on joining EITI has been signed by 31 companies, including Azerbaijan International Mining Company, which is engaged in gold mining in Azerbaijan.
