Within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, a panel discussion was held on "Decarbonization and adapting the cotton-to-clothing value chain," Azernews reports citing the Ministry of Agriculture.

It was reported that Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sarvan Jafarov, speaking at the event, emphasized the continuous development of the cotton-growing sector in Azerbaijan and highlighted the importance of an approach based on science, technology, and innovation to overcome the challenges posed by climate change.

The deputy minister noted that Azerbaijan has implemented a development strategy in cotton production and processing, benefiting from the experiences of countries and international organizations specializing in cotton farming. In particular, in recent years, joint projects with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been conducted to explore the use of nuclear technologies in developing new cotton varieties. Sarvan Jafarov added that the application of scientific methods has yielded positive results, with climate-friendly agricultural practices in pilot areas doubling productivity.

During the discussions, it was also noted that Azerbaijan is working to strengthen its domestic value chain by modernizing cotton processing infrastructure. Investments in new technologies aim to improve quality, increase processing capacity, and create new jobs in rural areas. Alongside digitalization initiatives and robust financial support mechanisms, these development models support Azerbaijan’s vision for its cotton industry to produce competitive products for international markets and transform the cotton processing sector into a sustainable and high-value industry.

Throughout the panel discussion, participants exchanged views on international practices aimed at minimizing the impacts of climate change, and questions from attendees were addressed.
