The number of employees in Azerbaijan in annual comparison increased by 1.6 percent and as of January 1, 2019 amounted to 1.5489 million people, of which 883,900 are employed in the public sector, 665,000 in the private sector of the economy.

The State Statistics Committee said that out of the total number of employees, 21.6 percent are working in education, 18.6 percent in trade and repair of vehicles, 13.4 percent in industry, 8.6 percent in health and social services, 7 percent in state administration and defense, social security, 6.8 percent in construction, 4.6 percent in transport and warehousing, 3.4 percent in professional, scientific and technical activities, 3.3 percent in agriculture, forestry and fisheries, 1.6 percent in finance and insurance, 11.1 percent - in other sectors of the economy.

According to the data for 2018, the average monthly nominal wage of employees in Azerbaijan in annual comparison increased by 3 percent and amounted to 544.1 manats. The highest average monthly salary is recorded in the areas of mining, financial and insurance activities, construction, information and communication, professional, scientific and technical activities, as well as transport and warehousing.

These noticeable improvements are evident example of farsighted policy pursued by President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev and one of the parts of this comprehensive policy is expressed in his order to increase the minimum monthly salary.

Due to this increase, the minimum monthly salary was raised to the level of the subsistence minimum in the country - 180 manats. According to estimates, the increase in the minimum wage will affect up to 600,000 workers in the republic. Due to the increase in the minimum wage, 400 million manats will be allocated from the state budget, and for ten months of 2019, up to 335 million manats.

It should be noted that as a result of the socially-oriented policy pursued by the country's leadership over the past 15 years, wages in Azerbaijan have increased by 7 times, the minimum wage - 6.5 times.

Apart from this, the self-employment program implemented by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Azerbaijan is aimed at providing jobs for low-income citizens, for which they are provided with funds to develop their own business or expand their farms, for example, to purchase large and small cattle.

Alternatively, increasing and indexing wages, pensions and scholarships in accordance with consumer demand, regularly adjusting real incomes of the population to the level of the market, continuous improvement of the health and education system, building hospitals, modernization of social insurance rules, targeted social assistance and the pension system - all of this is just one of the manifestations of the diversified social policy of Azerbaijan.
