Kazakhstan intends to attract IAEA experts to implementation of its plans on development of nuclear industry and peaceful nuclear technologies, Kazakh Foreign Minister Erlan Idrisov said during his meeting with Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano, who is on a working visit in Astana, Kazakh Foreign Ministry reported on August 22.

During the negotiations, Idrissov noted the leading role of the IAEA in the matters of peaceful use of nuclear energy, strengthening the nuclear safety regime.

Amano, in his turn, praised the level of bilateral cooperation between the Agency and Kazakhstan and emphasized the country's role as one of the leaders and responsible participants of the global process of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

During the meeting the parties discussed a large spectrum of issues of mutual interest.

Kazakhstan holds the second large uranium reserves in the world. Kazakhstan's Kazatomprom Joint Stock Company reported earlier that around 5,590 tons of uranium was produced in Kazakhstan in second quarter of 2013, which exceeds the same period of 2012 by 9 percent.

The IAEA was established in 1957 in response to the deep fears and expectations resulting from the discovery of nuclear energy. Its fortunes are uniquely geared to this controversial technology that can be used either as a weapon or as a practical and useful tool.
