Azeri hopeful leads polls ahead of Nevada vote
Native Azerbaijani US businessman Paul Murad, who is running for the post of deputy governor in the state of Nevada, leads the way in public opinion polls with 73 percent approval rating, Turkey’s Ankara news agency reported.
In a meeting with Turkish community leaders in New York on Sunday, Murad noted that the Lieutenant Governor heads the Nevada economic development and film and tourism commissions, pledging to revive the economy, boost the tourism industry and promote the opening of jobs in the state if elected.
Murad said that every year 40 million tourists visit Nevada, a state with a population of 2 million. The native Azerbaijani candidate, who is pursuing a "50-50" business plan, said he was committed to drawing 50 international companies and 50 US majors to his home state.
Tomris Azeri, the head of the US-Azerbaijan Society, which helped to organize the meeting, said the Turkic community had begun to strengthen its positions in the United States, and electing Murad the second top official in a key state like Nevada would advance that goal. Azeri added that the Azerbaijani community would back Murad’s bid for Lieutenant Governor with a large-scale campaign.
Murad, 35, at the age of 16 moved to the U.S. where he received a university degree. He is currently involved in real estate business in the fast-growing city of Las Vegas. Also, the entrepreneur is known in Nevada for his charity undertakings.
The Lieutenant Governor elections are scheduled for June 8.*
