Phishing attacks reduced in Azerbaijan

The number of phishing attacks in Azerbaijan segment of internet dropped by 10.13 percent in January-May 2014, Netcraft analytical company reports.

The analysis is based on the Netcraft Toolbar program, which is a plug-in for Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers. The program notifies users of a potentially dangerous Internet resources and prevention of a phishing attack.

Netcraft Toolbar is currently installed on 3,909 personal computers in Azerbaijan.

In early 2014, one phishing attack productive for scammers accounted for 896 sites in the .az domain in Azerbaijan, in early June this figure was reduced to 781, the report said.

As compared to the same period of 2013, the number of phishing attacks in AzNET's segment decreased by 64 percent.

Phishing attack is an attempt to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

Phishing is aimed at the specific people or enterprises. The attack is carried out by means of the mass mailing of electronic letters on behalf of famous brands.

Phishing emails may contain links to websites that are infected with malware.

Cybercrime growth is a side effect of development of the ICT sphere in Azerbaijan.

Last year, the Azerbaijan computer emergency response team (CERT) has become a member of the international Anti-Phishing Working Group, which is investigate the phishing attacks and coordinate the international activity to containment phishing.
