Vessels of Azerbaijan’s Caspian Shipping Company (CSC) transported nearly 13.2 million tons of cargoes in 2009. About 9.8m tons were shipped by tankers, nearly 2.3m tons by ferries, and slightly over 1m tons by the dry cargo fleet, the company’s head Aydin Bashirov told a press conference Friday.
Bashirov said, further, that more than 8m tons of consignments were transported last year through TRACECA, the Europe-Caucasus-Asia corridor, or 18% over the 2008 figure.
According to the CSC head, the company plans to transport over 13.5m tons of consignments this year, or 2.3% above 2009. 70-75% of the volume will be oil and oil products, while the rest will be dry cargoes.
Bashirov went on to say that the bulk of Kazakhstan’s oil and oil products transported through Azerbaijan has increased. Over 400,000 tons of the Central Asian state’s oil was transported in 2009, and Kazakhstan expects the volume to rise this year.
Bashirov also said that over the past seven years, the shipping company has purchased 14 new vessels, 10 tankers, two up-to-date ferry boats, one dry cargo ship and one passenger vessel. The purchases cost the company a total of nearly 202.4 million manats ($253 million).
The overall lifting capacity of the CSC’s vessels currently amounts to 520,700 tons. The fleet contains 43 tankers, 28 dry cargo ships and nine ferries. 37 auxiliary vessels are available as well.*
