Lukoil dismisses reports on CEO’s resignation (UPDATED)

MOSCOW – Russian oil major Lukoil has dismissed media reports saying its chief executive, Azerbaijani businessman Vagit Alekperov intends to resign.
Russian news agencies quoted the company’s press service as saying on Monday that the circulating reports have no merit.
Earlier, Russia’s RBK Daily reported that the Lukoil founder and president, Mr. Alekperov, could step down as early as September 1, when he celebrates his 60th birthday. The newspaper said, however, that he plans to head the company’s board of directors and has notified the company’s leadership about his plans.
Lukoil’s current board chairman, Mr. Valery Graifer, is reportedly expected to step down due to his old age.
RBK Daily also claimed that Lukoil Overseas President Mr. Andrei Kuzyayev, 45, could succeed Alekperov and that the appointment of Vice Presidents Mr. Ravil Maganov or Mr. Leonid Fedun was possible as well.
The report said that Mr. Alekperov has recently complained about his health condition and excessive workload.
Mr. Alekperov has presided Lukoil since its inception in 1993. He currently holds 20.54 percent of the company’s stock.
Previously, Mr. Alekperov was offered the post of Russia’s energy minister, but he refused to take the job.
