EP resolution against Azerbaijan is unconstructive, unjust

Honorary speaker of the Belgian senate Anne-Marie Lizin has sent a protest letter to chairman of the European Parliament Martin Schulz due to the biased resolution adopted by this structure on Azerbaijan, AzerTac reports with reference to the Council of State Support to NGOs.

The letter says: ''I would like to share my impressions of the activities carried out by me in Azerbaijan in connection with women (for many years I have been contributing to the protection of women's rights), and deep regret over the recent resolution of the European Parliament.

Together with a group of Azerbaijani women I read the last resolution of the European Parliament on Azerbaijan. There are various ways to solve the problems and challenges that exist between partners. Unfortunately, this resolution is not constructive. It is inherently unfair. The European Union has many problems in the Eastern neighborhood and such erroneous decisions reduce the influence of the EU in the region.”

Lizin believes that to achieve a positive result, Europe needs to be open to cooperation with Azerbaijan.

“We have a need for a better dialogue with Azerbaijan and our other eastern partners. My friends among women in Azerbaijan have no ties with the country's government; they spend a lot of time contributing to the development of women's rights. However, the resolution of the European Parliament has had a negative impact on relations between the EU and Azerbaijan. This fact discouraged many people including those who have been supporting closer cooperation with the European Union. Such efforts will not bring any positive results. European Parliament should establish a closer dialogue with Azerbaijan, and if we want to see concrete results, the process should proceed in a constructive manner.

Dear Martin, as a President, you are the only person who can give the right impetus to the restoration of dialogue. Due to the fact that there is an example of Armenia, which has never been criticized by the European organizations, Azerbaijan is seem to become a victim of double standards. Why do we always focus on Azerbaijan never bringing to the agenda the issue of Armenia? Many Azerbaijanis regard this as a manifestation of double standards which reduce the European Union's potential positive impact on Azerbaijan. I believe, that as a chairman, you will inspire the European Parliament members to restore dialogue with Azerbaijan and implement certain steps aimed at constructive discussion.”
