Institute for Peace Science of the Hiroshima University has hosted a presentation made by Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Japan Gursel Ismayilzade on Azerbaijan.

Ismayilzade said Azerbaijan has turned into a democratic country with a stable political system thanks to successful reforms as well as considerable work carried out by the Azerbaijani government.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the country has grown, and a favorable investment climate has been created during the presidency of Ilham Aliyev, he said.

Ismayilzade also provided insight in to the presidential election which took place in Azerbaijan on October 9.

The October 9 presidential election in Azerbaijan ended with the overwhelming victory of President Ilham Aliyev, who was re-elected after being nominated by the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.

According to the election tallies drawn up after processing the ballot papers from all polling stations, Ilham Aliyev got 3,126,612 votes (84.55 percent).

Ismayilzade said the elections were free, just, and transparent.

He said a number of international organizations as well as independent observers praised the election process as excellent.

Ismayilzade said the presidential election in the country was held in line with democratic standards, adding it marked high voter turnout and wide application of advanced technologies.

He highlighted Azerbaijan's history, and economic policy.

He also said that Azerbaijan plays a key role in ensuring global energy security.

He hailed the government's attention to developing the non-oil sector in the country, saying there was great potential in the fields of industry, tourism, agriculture, as well as in the renewable and non-renewable energy resources sector.

Ismayilzade said Azerbaijan has justified itself as a reliable partner in the international relations system, saying the election of the country to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member for 2012-2013 years is yet another evidence of this.

He also spoke of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, particularly the occupation of 20 percent of the country`s lands by Armenia and expulsion of over 1 million Azerbaijanis from their homes.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions.

A documentary reflecting Azerbaijan's history, culture, art, cuisine, ethnic dances, carpets and tourism potential was demonstrated at the event.

Issues of the Azerbaijan magazine IRS-Heritage were presented to participants in Japanese.

The diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Japan were established in 1992.

Relations between the two countries are dynamically developing. Japan was one of the first countries to support Azerbaijan's forward-looking oil strategy. Today two major Japanese companies Itochu and Impex are involved in the Contract of the Century. Such leaders of Japanese business, as Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Marubeni, Sojits are involved in the energy and infrastructure projects in the country.
