Foreign company's staff demand pay raises
Some 500 Azerbaijani employees of the Singapore-owned Caspian Shipyard Company (CSC) operating in the oil and gas industry staged a strike last week demanding pay raises.
The protesters called for raising their salaries to the level of those paid to expatriate employees, charging wide differences in the administration's attitude toward local and foreign workers. For instance, Azerbaijani citizens are granted only a 21-day vacation, compared to 40 days given to foreign staff. The strikers are also disgruntled with their treatment by foreign supervisors. They submitted their demands in writing to the company administration.
The CSC has told Radio Liberty that the company's executives sought a week's time to address the problem. Azerbaijani employees have warned they would resume strikes if their demands are not met over this period.
The company is the subcontractor of Italian major Agip operating in Kazakhstan.
This was the sixth strike staged by Azerbaijanis working in foreign companies in the past five months.
