Turkey set to approve Azerbaijan strategic deal

ANKARA – The Turkish parliament’s foreign affairs committee has approved the country’s strategic deal with Azerbaijan that covers mutual military aid, Turkey’s Milliyet newspaper reported.

The agreement is due to be further endorsed in the Grand National Assembly and then by the Turkish president.

The 10-year strategic partnership agreement was signed in August 2010 in Baku by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul. The Azerbaijani parliament ratified the deal last December.

One of the clauses of the agreement covers mutual military assistance in case of an outside attack. Thus, if one of the countries comes under a military incursion, the other signatory is to provide it with military assistance.

The partnership deal also envisions cooperation in such areas as arms supplies, joint production of military goods and holding joint military exercises.

Azerbaijan faces a two-decade-long conflict with Armenia. 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory has been under Armenian occupation since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war.
