UK backs Georgia’s closer EU, NATO integration

The United Kingdom supports Georgia's closer integration to the European Union and NATO, said David Lidington, British Deputy Foreign Minister and State Minister on European Issues.

Lidington said he was glad to start a dialogue between the Great Britain and Georgia with the Georgian Foreign Minister Tamar Beruchashvili.

"I hope that our meetings will further intensify even when Georgia continues to develop its own relations with the Euro-Atlantic zone," he noted.

The two diplomats mulled the issues related to the foreign policy, national security and defense, as well as the interaction in trade, economics and energy. Particular stress was put on the fields where Great Britain and Georgia are able to work closer and exchange mutual experience and knowledge.

Great Britain and Georgia have regular political and economic relations. GB supports Georgia's efforts to settle the conflicts in the breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions. The European giant also backs the South Caucasus country to create an efficient army, by arranging regular training for Georgian military personnel.
