Uzbekistan, ILO boost co-op

The Uzbek government and the International Labor Organization (ILO, the UN specialized agency) have signed a program of technical cooperation for 2014-2016.

The document entitled 'Decent Work Agenda' was signed by Uzbek Minister of Labour and Social Ptotection, Ahmad Khaitov, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Alisher Shaykhov and the chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions, Tanzila Narbaeva.

From the ILO side, the document was signed by Dimitrina Dimitrova, Director of the ILO Decent Work Technical Support Team and Country Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The program's priorities include the promotion of international labor standards and fundamental principles and rights in the sphere of labor, development of social dialogue, assistance to employment through the implementation of active policy in the labor market and business development, strengthening labor protection and expanding the coverage of the social security system, the UN representative office in Uzbekistan said.

Under the program, the ILO will support the implementation of the national action plan on elimination of child labor. The program also aims to improve working conditions and employment in agriculture, including cotton growing. This will ensure the development of these spheres in accordance with international labor standards and decent work principles.

The program is expected to open up new opportunities for the UN to bring together the resources, the experience of specialized agencies and best practices from around the world to promote Uzbekistan's development.
