National Academy of Sciences proposes to design science strategy for next stage

The annual general meeting of the the National Academy Sciences of Azerbaijan (AMEA) on the execution of the National Science Development Strategy 2009-15 took place on April, 27, Trend reports.

The meeting was attended by head of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan, academician Ramiz Mehdiyev, head of Department of humanitarian policy issues Fatma Abdullazadeh, rector of the Baku branch of Moscow State Lomonosov University Professor Nargiz Pashayeva, SOCAR Vice-President Khoshbakht Yusifzadeh, Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Faiq Tagizade, Education Minister Mikayil Jabbarov, Deputy Minister of Health Elsever Agayev as well as authorized representatives of government agencies, full and corresponding members of AMEA, heads of institutes and organizations.

Addressing the event, AMEA president Akif Alizadeh underlined the necessity for the adoption of the Strategy for the next stage.

"We face the task of defining priorities for fundamental and applied research to address important socio-economic and socio-cultural issues, ensure active participation of scientists in implementation of state programs, development of reforms conducted to ensure domestic science in compliance with international scientific standards," said Alizadeh.

He stressed that the important tasks include the systematic classification of the scientific research institute, assessment of scientific and scientific-organizational activities, strengthening of the logistics of science and adoption at the next stage of the National strategy to advance science and to perform these tasks.

Also, the two important criteria were taken as the basis of the final program – trends in the development of global science and the socio-economic and cultural development of the country.

The main objective of the National strategy is to develop science and education as a single institution. Alizadeh said that the organization of the master's education is one of the important steps taken in this direction.

"New scientific institutions were established in the Academy with the development of new priority research industries and new labs and offices at the existing institutions. In addition, multidisciplinary researches are conducted with this goal," he added.

He also pointed to Academy’s new innovation policy: development of a network of technoparks, technology centres, business incubators, large success of the AMEA testing plant in creation of high-tech products, joint activity with the Military Academy of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Defence Industry with the purpose of strengthening the country’s defense power, as well as a number of projects for the production of military products.

"I am sure that Azerbaijani scientists will be able to meet adequately their tasks in the future as in previous years due to the government’s care and attention towards science and mobilizing scientific capacity at the level of modern requirements," he added.

The National Academy of Sciences is the main state research organization and the primary body that conducts research and coordinates activities in the fields of science and social sciences in Azerbaijan. It was established on 23 January 1945.
