U.S. hopes for failure of Syria conference by sidelining Iran: diplomat

The U.S. by opposing Iran's participation in the international conference on Syria, hopes for the failure of the 'Geneva 2' conference, the Iranian ambassador in Russia Seyed Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi said on June 10, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

"Claims that Iran should not participate at the Syria conference are perhaps because the countries that make such statements themselves do not want to participate in it. The U.S. talks about it (that Iran should not participate in the conference), do not doubt that the U.S. wants that the results of the Geneva Conference to face defeat," he said at a press conference.

According to the ambassador, the Syrian disaster is an example of the most miserable implementation of double standards by Western countries. This is displayed in particular, in the supply of weapons by the West exclusively for the Syrian opposition.

The initiative for carrying out the conference on Syria which should be a continuation of a meeting in Geneva on June 30, 2012, was taken by Russia and the United States at the beginning of May. Countries that support the Syrian opposition and members of the 'Friends of Syria' group expressed their support for the event. The Syrian government has previously announced a principle agreement to take part in this conference.

Moscow insists on inviting representatives from Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, while Western countries consider Tehran's participation as unreasonable. The question of who will participate in 'Geneva 2' from the Syrian opposition is also left unresolved. However, it was decided to hold the next consultations on June 25 after which the sides hope to hold the conference in July.
