Azerbaijan, Pakistan eye prospects for expanding ties

The development of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Pakistan was mulled as Baku’s Ambassador to Pakistan Ali Alizade has met with Pakistani Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan, Azertac reported.

They hailed Azerbaijan's and Pakistan's constantly supporting each other. "Both countries' heads of state have significantly contributed to the development of bilateral relations," they noted.

The two hailed a variety of humanitarian and social projects which were implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and noted the importance of enhancing economic and trade ties.

Highlighting the socio-economic development in Azerbaijan, as well as favorable conditions created for foreign investors, activities of industrial towns and investment parks and other economic and trade opportunities, the ambassador noted the Pakistani businessmen would be able to take advantage of this situation.

The minister, in turn, recalled President Ilham Aliyev's meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz this January in Davos.

He hailed “great” potential for further development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The fundamental building block of the bilateral relationship between Azerbaijan and Pakistan is military cooperation. The sides intend to join efforts to gain access to modern technologies, as well as modernize their potential.

Azerbaijan and Pakistan also focused on the development of economic relations. The two countries have agreed on boosting bilateral trade and investment cooperation.

Although the countries enjoy very close friendly relations at diplomatic level, these close ties have not been translated into significant commercial gains. The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Pakistan stood at $2.8 million in 2014, according to the Azerbaijan State Customs Committee.
