Azerbaijan has launched a new sort of wheat called ‘Triticum-abscheronicum-Aliyeva et Aminov sp. Nova’, the Genetic Reserves Institute under the National Academy of Sciences told Trend Agency on January 27.

Also, a new sort of hard wheat ‘Saray’, as well as a cotton sort ‘Zafer’ was produced in Azerbaijan.

The State Service for Control of Seeds and Registration of Plant Sorts under Azerbaijan’s Agriculture Ministry has received other wheat sorts like ‘Leyla’ (T.durum-v.leucomelan) and ‘Maya’ (T.aestivum-v.lutescens), barley ‘Ughur’ (H.vulgare-v.nutans) and ‘Jamil’ (H.vulgare-v.glabriparalellum), peas ‘Jamila’ (Cicer-arietinum-v.kabuli), almond ‘Leyla’, ‘Ana’ and ‘Nuray’ (Prunus-dulcis (Mill.) DAWebb), and cotton ‘Barakat’ (Gossypium-hirsutum L.)

Production of grain takes the first place among agricultural plants. This is the oldest section of plant-growing in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan has favourable soil and climatic conditions for the development of this field of agriculture.

Irrigated grain is planted in the lowland regions of Azerbaijan while the highlands and foothills of the country are sown with grain without irrigation.

The main sorts of wheat and barley grown in Azerbaijan are saribugda, gurgeni, qaraqilchiq, xirdabugda, guluser, kere, Karabakh wheat, white wheat, shekilibugda, garagilebugda, topbashbugda, white barley, black barley, shesheri barley, qilici barley, etc.

Generally, Azerbaijan produces autumn grains in the lowland territories, including Kur-Araz, Ganja-Gazakh and the foothill areas of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, due to favourable climatic conditions there. The Sheki, Ismayilli, Shamakhi, Jalilabad, Sabirabad, Balakan and Beylagan regions of Azerbaijan specialize in grain production.

Azerbaijan produced 2.4 million tons of grain in 2014.

In 2015, Azerbaijan will increase its grain production. The country is expected to produce 2.5 million tons of grain in 2015.

The Agriculture Ministry has set a goal to increase the grain production to 3 million tons in 2017.
