Azerbaijan to export passenger rail cars

Passenger cars, which will be produced at the Ganja city railroad car manufacturing plant, will be exported, the Head of Azerbaijan Railways Arif Asgarov said on October 13.

As the second largest city in Azerbaijan located on the west of the country 345 km away from Baku, Ganja will have the carriage works in the near future.

Asgarov said the export of passenger cars to the countries of Central Asia, Iran and others is one of the priorities of the plant, which is working together with "Stadler" company.

Along with that, the construction will also meet the country's domestic needs, he added.

Initially, the plant will produce 50 rail cars per year. The construction of the plant itself will take about 1.5 years.

"The inauguration ceremony of the new enterprise will be held in the near future," Askerov said.

The project on creation of a new railroad cars enterprise is very important, since along with the production of new ones it would ensure their overhaul in the country.

Today, because of the lack of the necessary infrastructure for the overhaul of cars in the country, Azerbaijan Railways sends its productions abroad, particularly to Russia and Ukraine.

Azerbaijan Railways also cooperates with Stadler within the framework of the contract for the sale of 30 new passenger railroad cars signed in June. Supply of cars will be implemented by 2015.

The cars will be delivered to the country before the commissioning of the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, which is scheduled for 2015, designed to connect the railways of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.

The new cars will contribute to the rapid replacement of wheels for movement on the European tracks.

Azerbaijan Railways ranks 57th in the world for the length of railroads. Currently, the total length of main roads is 2,932 km; the operational length is 2,117 km, including 815 km of bilateral roads. 1,272 km of the total length of the path, i.e. 60 percent is electrified, 845 km, i.e., 40 percent is operated by the diesel traction.

Earlier, the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers increased the authorized capital of Azerbaijan Railways by 21.2 percent-from 599 million manats to 726.146 million manats.

Azerbaijan Railways' revenues amounted to 223.1 million manats in 2013. The revenues were generated through freight (208.2 million manats) and passenger (14.9 million manats) transportation.

The company's expenditures in 2013 reached 214 million manats, and the company's net profit last year was 9 million manats.

Azerbaijan Railways transported 23.2 million tons of cargo and 2.5 million passengers in 2013.
