Turkey’s Shanghai membership would be interesting: US official
Turkey's possible membership in the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) would be interesting, the U.S. State Department
spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Monday, Trend news agency
reported referring to Hurriyet Daily News.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had recently said in a
television interview that Turkey is seriously considering seeking
membership in the SCO as an alternative at a time when the EU's
future looks increasingly dim.
When asked during the State Department's weekly press briefing
whether Nuland had any comment on the issue, she said it would be
interesting. "I didn't see that comment by Erdoğan. Obviously, it
would be interesting, given the fact that Turkey's also a NATO
member. We'll have to see how that goes."
