Azerbaijan, reliable ally in South Caucasus: French MP
By Nazrin Gadimova
Azerbaijan is gaining more and more importance in the international arena, a member of the French Senate Nathalie Goulet said on May 9.
"Now we can say with confidence that Azerbaijan is becoming more and more important to the world, especially after the Ukrainian crisis," Goulet, who is on an official visit to Baku as part of a French delegation told to Trend.
"The Ukrainian crisis revealed the true position of many countries," Goulet added.
She said Azerbaijan's support for the Ukrainian territorial integrity during the voting in the UN General Assembly on Crimea has shown that Azerbaijan is a reliable ally in the South Caucasian region.
"Ukrainian crisis showed that Azerbaijan is a trustful ally in the South Caucasus. After the events in Ukraine, we have become more attentive to countries of the region, and this is good for Azerbaijan," the French official said.
Goulet stressed that the Crimean crisis has enhanced Azerbaijan's status in the world as it showed the world that Azerbaijan is a reliable ally in matters of diplomacy and strategic partnership.
Touching upon the issue of cooperation between Azerbaijan and France, the French MP noted that bilateral relations between the two countries are already at a very high level.
The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution rejecting the referendum on Crimea annexation on March 16 as invalid. Some 100 countries voted for, 58 - abstained, while Russia and ten other countries voted against it.
Russia's position was supported by Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, North Korea, Nicaragua, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
