Migrants not to face problems with new law in Azerbaijan: official

By Nigar Orujova

Migrants will not encounter any difficulties after innovations in the legislation of Azerbaijan, chief of the State Migration Service Firudin Nabiyev told the local press.

The Azerbaijani parliament passed the Migration Code in the third reading at its extraordinary session on June 13.

"The adopted Migration Code has many innovations and supplements," Nabiyev said. "The new Code simplified processes, and they [migrants] are provided with considerable benefits. For example, whereas earlier we could not provide workers the right to temporary residence in Azerbaijan for more than a year, now we can provide this right for up to three years to those people who invest in Azerbaijan. The Code also reflects certain issues on protecting their rights."

Nabiyev said the Code will go into effect from July 15. Prior to that, the Service will provide public information about the Code and will hold a press conference for the media.

The Code sets standards for public policy on migration, regulation of the migration processes and relationships related to this field, as well as rules on the legal status of foreign nationals and persons without citizenship in Azerbaijan.

The final version of the bill reflected such issues as the study of the Azerbaijani language by foreign citizens permanently residing in Azerbaijan and granting citizenship to foreigners who invested hefty assets in the country's economy, as well as the citizenship of people living outside the country and the issue of simplifying registration.
