Azerbaijan works to return its citizens detained in Iran

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry is currently working to return an employee of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Khalida Khalid and her driver who were detained earlier in Iran, Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev said at a press briefing on May 20.

"We hope our citizens will return to Azerbaijan in the near future," he said.

The consulate is coordinating their return home.

Research fellow of the Nizami Ganjavi Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences, orientalist Khalida Khalid and her assistant Shamkhal Huseynov have been released, member of Milli Majlis (Parliament) and member of an official delegation to Iran, Eldar Ibragimov told Trend news agency.

The delegation is headed by the chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Office Allahshukur Pashazade.

The information on the release of Azerbaijani citizens was confirmed by the Ambassador of Iran to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pak Ayin.

Khalida Khalid and her assistant will be sent to Azerbaijan in the next few days, Pak Ayin told Trend.

Khalida Khalid and her assistant were arrested on April 30 in Tabriz by officers of the Ministry of Information, Security and Intelligence of Iran, the Iranian media reported earlier.

Azerbaijan sent two protest notes to the Iranian Foreign Ministry in regards to the detention of its citizens.
