U.S. says it closely watches situation with writer Akram Aylisli

Spokesperson of the U.S. State Department Victoria Nuland commented on the situation with writer Akram Aylisli during a daily press briefing.

Nuland stated that calling the Modern Musavat Party Chairman Hafiz Hajiyev, who threatened the writer in for questioning, is the right way.

She said that the U.S. has been watching this very closely and expressed the hope that the Azerbaijani Government will ensure the security of Akram Aylisli.

Earlier the Modern Musavat Party Chairman Hafiz Hajiyev offered a 10,000 manat reward to someone who will cut off Akram Aylisli's ear.

The situation surrounding the writer escalated after the publication of his provocative novel Stone Dreams which caused a negative reaction among public, political and non-governmental organisations.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed orders depriving writer Akram Aylisli an honorary title of People's Writer of Azerbaijan and a presidential pension.
