Cargo traffic through TRACECA’s Azerbaijani sector decreases

About 15.71 million tons of cargos were transported via the Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA) through Azerbaijan's territory in January-April 2016, or 12.3 percent less than in the same period 2015, said Azerbaijan's State Statistics Committee (SSC).

The main reason for the decrease is the decline in cargo transportation via rail and maritime transport by 24.6 percent and 43.9 percent, respectively.

Cargo transportation by motor vehicles rose by 2.7 percent in the reporting period.

Some 64.2 percent (10.09 million tons) of the cargos were transported by motor vehicles, 27 percent (4.23 million tons) - by railway, 8.8 percent (1.38 million tons) - by maritime transport, said SSC.

Meanwhile, 109.7 million passengers were transported via the corridor through Azerbaijan's territory in January-April 2016, which is 2.2 percent more than in January-April 2015.

TRACECA is an international cooperation program in the sphere of transport among the EU and partner-countries in Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. The organization has a permanent secretariat in Baku.

TRACECA member-states are Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Moldova, Romania, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine and Iran.
