Norwegian envoy: European Games to be important moment for Baku

First European Games will be an important moment for Baku, said Norwegian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Bard Ivar Svendsen as he was interviewed by CNN TV channel.

Baku 2015 European Games will give opportunities to over 6,000 athletes to compete for medals in 20 sports from June 12 to June 28.

The ambassador said many of the Norwegian athletes have used the last few months to prepare for the European Games by competing with fellow European athletes and qualifying through other important events across Europe, such as the European Grand Prix, Gothenburg Open and the European Championship in Gymnastics.

There will be 57 Norwegian athletes participating in the first European Games. The athletes will compete in 14 categories: beach volleyball; boxing; wrestling; archery; shooting; fencing; karate; canoe sprint; swimming; diving; cycling; taekwondo; triathlon and gymnastics.

“Based on the high quality of our athletes, the Norwegian Olympic Committee has expressed a hope that Norway will take at least three medals during the European Games, as well as qualifying to the Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro,” Svendsen said.

“Among these athletes is the Norwegian Bartosz Piasecki, one of the world’s greatest fencers. In 2012 he won the silver medal in the Summer Olympics in London, and he will be competing for new medals in the European Games. The Norwegian embassy in Baku hopes to participate both in the inauguration of the European Games and in the various competitions where Norway will be represented throughout the games.

Both Baku and BEGOC has done an impressive job at preparing for the European Games. Due to BEGOCs work there is currently a young and vibrant international presence in Baku, consisting of athletes, volunteers, and international BEGOC staff. The preparations have provided a good opportunity for experts to exchange experiences and together provide for a professional conduct of the European Games.”
