Baku, Bishkek focus on cooperation in defense field

Baku and Bishkek have discussed the prospects of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of defense, military education, as well as regional security issues.

Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov, Azerbaijan’s Defense Minister met visiting Abibilla Kudaiberdiev, Kyrgyz Defense Minister in Baku on February 11, Azerbaijani defense ministry reported.

Speaking about the military-political situation in the region, Hasanov noted that Armenia, which occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territories, is the main threat to stability in the South Caucasus.

Hasanov stressed the importance of settling the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in accordance with the norms and principles of international law.

Kudaiberdiev, for his part, said relations between the two countries are based on the strong friendly and fraternal relations.

The sides also exchanged views on issues of common interest.

The meeting was also attended by Aydzhigit Buranov, Kyrgyzstan’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan.

The Kyrgyz minister was earlier received by President Ilham Aliyev. The sides discussed prospects for cooperation in the various fields.

Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan was established on January 19, 1993.

Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan are working together to strengthen their partnership in industry, trade, communications, and transportation fields. The two countries also intend to develop cooperation between their justice authorities.
