Azerbaijani-Iranian intergovernmental commission to convene soon

The Azerbaijani-Iranian intergovernmental commission will convene in Baku on August 13-14.

Azerbaijani Minister of Communications and High Technologies Ali Abbasov, who is on a visit in Tehran told this to AzerTag news agency.

"We reached agreement on this issue at a meeting with Iran's Minister of Communications and Information Technology and the Co-chair of the intergovernmental commission Mahmoud Vaizi," Abbasov said.

He also said that Azerbaijan and Iran have large oil and gas reserves adding, the economies of the two countries depend on natural resources to some extent.

"We have similar opinions and wishes regarding the development of the high-technologies sector, which has great prospects," Abbasov added.

Abbasov said as a result of the activities of Azerbaijani-Iranian intergovernmental commission the two countries will draw up an agreement on cooperation in the field of information and communication technologies.

"The signing of the agreement will open the Iranian ICT market to Azerbaijani companies. Meanwhile, the Iranian companies will gain access to the Azerbaijani market," Abbasov added.

Abassov met with Iran's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Vaezi, Iran's First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri, Head of IRIB (Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting) Ezatullah Zarghami and other officials and discussed issues of interests during his visit to Iran.

Abbasov's visit to the neighboring country kicked off on June 17 at the invitation of Vaezi.

Azerbaijan and Iran have had diplomatic relations since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992.

Data from the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan shows that trade turnover between the two countries amounted to $281.03 million in 2013, which is 6.13 percent higher than 2012. The figure stood at $263.785 million in 2012.

Iran imported $73.347 million worth of goods from Azerbaijan in 2013, while its exports to Azerbaijan stood at $207.683 million during the same period.

Iran's trade turnover with Azerbaijan in the first eleven months of 2013 stood at $470 million ($448 million exports and $22 million imports), Iran's customs administration's latest report shows.
