Most HIV positive people in Azerbaijan are drug addicts
HIV infection is mostly found among injecting drug users in Azerbaijan, the Public Health and Reforms Center at the Azerbaijani Health Ministry told Trend news agency.
The center said international experience is used in the fight against HIV in Azerbaijan,. Therefore, Azerbaijan is a country with a low level of HIV infection. However, today this problem is still relevant in Azerbaijan and is controlled by Health Ministry.
In 1996, the Milli Majlis (Parliament) adopted the law 'On prevention of HIV / AIDS spread.' According to the law, those, knowingly spreading the disease, will be punished with imprisonment of three to seven years.
World AIDS Day is marked annually on December 1.
About 40 million people in the world are HIV carriers.
