White City to give Baku a new look
An up-to-date center will be built in an area called "The Black City" in the Khatai district of Baku, changing the looks of the capital.
According to Britain’s engineering and construction firm WS Atkins, which is engaged in architectural design and engineering, the project, developed under an order from the city’s mayor’s office, will allow to create a contemporary center in the capital that will be called Baku White City. Under the master plan, the area, to encompass 221 hectares, will include ten universal urban blocks providing topnotch conditions for city residents to enjoy their everyday lives, including perfect conditions for work, recreation and entertainment.
The topnotch center will also stand out for its advanced transport network. Thus, a subway station linked to the central square of the Baku White City is to be built and the bus system improved. Also, a maritime route is to be created along the Baku Boulevard (seaside park), which is located in the central part of the Baku Bay and considered a pearl of the Azerbaijani capital. A tram line is to be laid along the entire coastline as well.
Along with Azerbaijani specialists, foreign companies will be involved in implementing the project. In addition to Atkins, such majors as Foster + Partners and California-based architectural firm F+A Architects have been drawn to the project.
The Atkins company, established in 1938, has implemented projects in 200 countries so far. Its most outstanding project was the Dubai-based Burj-Al-Arab, the tallest hotel in the world constructed at sea, which was included in the Guinness World Records.*
