The remains of fortresses and many cultural samples of the Middle Ages were discovered during archeological excavations carried out in the Giziltapa area of the Gizilkend administrative district unit of Imishli region.

The excavation led by the head of the Imishli archeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, Mikayil Mustafayev revealed that the finding was a defensive and severely protected fortress.

The two parts are located in Giziltapa, covering more than 5 hectares. It is possible to observe the surrounding area with a height of about 25 meters. During the observations, approximate outlines of the perpendicular tower were identified and the remains of the fortress walls were found around the height.

At the top of the tower, historical artifacts dating from the Middle Ages have appeared. Here, for the first time, archaeologists have discovered material culture samples, which estimated ages were reported as thousands of years. There are also many household items with colorful patterns and hand-worn tattoos.

While the first phase of the excavation shows that Giziltapa belongs to the Middle Ages, experts believe that the systematic continuation of the excavations can reveal ancient ages.

Giziltapa is a tall hill located in the administrative-territorial unit of Gizilkend administrative district of Imishli region.
