Dagestan highlights importance of Derbent-Baku railway route

Head of the Dagestan Republic Ramazan Abdulatipov has expressed his confidence in the necessity of launching an express train through the Derbent - Baku route, RIA Dagestan reported.

Abdulatipov made the remark while addressing a meeting with the Head of North Caucasus Railway, which is a branch of the Russian Railways.

He also mentioned that the route is in high demand by the population of Dagestan. Abdulatipov noted that resolution of the issue on construction process of the railway infrastructure and entry point at the border with Azerbaijan is one of the issues of top priority.

Earlier, Trend reported that the authorities of Dagestan seek to develop a road map to remove obstacles on the way of tourists. The road map is aimed at lifting barriers at the exit and entrance of tourists on the Russian-Azerbaijani border.

Previously, in an exclusive interview to Trend, Abdulatipov said that Azerbaijan and Dagestan have a lot of joint projects on the agenda including logistics, agricultural, cultural and sports projects. The projects are expected to significantly improve the cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan's trade turnover with Russia amounts to more than $2 billion, $160 million of which falls to a share of Dagestan. Earlier, Azerbaijan Economy Minister Shahin Mustafayev said that the current level of trade turnover is insufficient as both countries have enough potential to increase it.

Azerbaijan continues to strengthen business cooperation with Russian regions, thus increasing number of mutual agreements and business entities.

Bilateral agreements on trade-economic, scientific-technical, and cultural cooperation were signed with a number of Russian regions at the intergovernmental level till now.
