By Laman Ismayilova

The Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee has launched a call for proposals to select a mascot for the 42nd World Chess Olympiad.

The Operating Committee is calling upon Azerbaijanis of all ages to submit proposals for the World Chess Olympiad scheduled for September in Baku.

The mascots are important message transmission vehicles for the major sports events. Essential to the spectator experience, the mascots mainly reflect the host country identity and culture.

The author of the best work will receive a 1,000 manats ($603) cash price and two invitations for the opening ceremony of the World Chess Olympiad.

The drawings can be sent by e-mail to [email protected]. Please don`t forget to provide your phone number. The applications will be accepted until April 9, 2016.

The first World Chess Olympiad in Azerbaijan will be held from September 1 to 14 at the Crystal Hall, an indoor arena once hosting Eurovision Song Contest (2012).

The chess tournament will host about 2,000 chess masters from 175 countries, while the number of guests is expected to reach up to 3,000.
