Azerbaijan's capital will host one of the stages of the FIDE Grand Prix by late 2014.

The Azerbaijani Chess Federation and FIDE agreed that the Grand Prix will start on October 1 in Baku and will run for ten days.

Baku earlier hosted FIDE Grand Prix in April-May, 2008. The winner of the stage was late Azerbaijani grandmaster Vugar Gashimov.

Moreover, the 42nd Chess Olympiad, organized by FIDE, will take place in Baku in 2016. There were two other cities bidding to host the event - Albena in Bulgaria and Tallinn in Estonia. Both cities did not make presentations before the voting and were not approved.
