Baku has hosted an international conference entitled "Involving Parliaments of the Eastern Partnership Member States in promoting gender equality and women's health within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals".

The event was jointly organized by the Parliament of the country, the Committee for Social Affairs, Education, Culture and Civil Societies of the Parliamentary Assembly "Euronest", the European Parliament Forum on Population and Development and the UN Office in Azerbaijan.

Opening the conference, Chairman of the Parliamentary Youth and Sports Committee Fuad Muradov emphasized the importance of the event.

Muradov stated that as part of the Euronest PA, several events are planned to be held throughout 2017.

Muradov further informed the participants about the Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan, saying the occupation is one of the main reasons preventing achievement of great success.

“More than one million Azerbaijanis are refugees and IDPs, and 50 percent of them are women, five percent are children. Our goal in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure that each organization fulfills its tasks,” said the Azerbaijani MP.

Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Bahar Muradova, in turn, noted that Azerbaijan gained important successes since regaining the independence.

“Azerbaijan has done a great job in creating all the conditions for economic development, in the field of establishing ties with the countries of the near and far abroad, having proved that the country is a very responsible partner,” she said.

Stressing that holding such an event in Azerbaijan is extremely important, the Deputy Speaker noted that the Sustainable Development Goals are based on a healthy life and a healthy ecological environment.

“Today, Azerbaijan has achieved concrete results in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and has carried out concrete work to achieve them. Our resources allow us to solve problems,” she said.

Calling on all parliamentarians to be active, Muradova also noted the importance of transferring Azerbaijan's experience in this area to other countries.

Chairman of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children, Hijran Huseynova, in turn, said that next year Azerbaijan will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the giving women election rights.

The existence of the Women and Children Committee shows how much Azerbaijan values women's politics, according to her.

Huseynova further said that all the legislation of Azerbaijan was amended in terms of gender expertise.

“We have organized many projects through Family Support Centers in some regions of the country. We achieve a gender policy in state and executive systems. Today, there is at least one female deputy in the system,” she said.

In 1918, Azerbaijan became the first country in the east to grant women suffrage. In Azerbaijan, women are becoming more actively involved in social life.

The proportion of women among entrepreneurs reached 21 percent in early 2017. The proportion of women in the Azerbaijani Parliament is 188 percent. Deputy Heads in 71 executive powers out of the 78 are female.

Together with other UN Member States, Azerbaijan signed off on the 2015-2030 global sustainable development agenda at the September 2015 Sustainable Development Summit in New York.

This summit also approved the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are now being used to measure progress in rich and poor countries alike in reducing poverty and inequalities while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions and investing in the preservation of the planet’s ecosystems.
