Ombudsman protests against European Ombudsman Institute

Azerbaijan`s human rights commissioner Elmira Suleymanova has sent a letter of protest to secretary general of the European Ombudsman Institute (EOI) Josef Siegele over the tendentious and slanderous information about Azerbaijan posted on the EOI website, Azertac reports.

Mrs. Suleymanova raised objection to the institute`s statement titled “The EOI condemns the violation of the human rights of civilians and attacks on civilian facilities”, dated 11.04.2016.

“In fact there have never taken place such attacks on civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh. It is known that Armenian armed forces constantly shatter the ceasefire from their own territory and Azerbaijan`s occupied lands. They are mostly targeting civilians living in the cities and villages nearby. There are a number of facts to prove it,” she said, emphasizing that the abovementioned statement has not been expressed properly.

“In reference to your untrue statement, a number of Armenian information sites has released misinformation that “the EOI condemns Azerbaijan for attacks on civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh,” seeking to deceive the international community. Therefore, we call for the removal of the EOI`s statement dated 11.04.2016 and a refutation,” she stressed in her letter.

Starting from April 27 evening until 04:00 (GMT + 4) April 28, the Armenian armed forces were firing at the Azerbaijani settlements and the Azerbaijani army positions in the Terter and Aghdam districts of Azerbaijan.

Two people were killed and many more wounded as a result of the Aghdam shelling. At least 84 houses in the district were heavily damaged, some of them completely destroyed.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
