Turkey’s EU membership is close- minister

Turkey's Minister for EU Affairs Egemen Bagish said that his country may become a full member of the EU in the coming years, if no artificial barriers are imposed upon it, Anadolu agency reported on July 3.

The minister said Turkey has fulfilled 65 percent of its commitments to the EU.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the decision was made to start a new round of negotiations between Turkey and the European Union. Turkey and the EU could agree on the consideration of another technical issue within the negotiations on accession to the EU. The Foreign Minister also said that EU membership is one of the main directions of Turkey's foreign policy.

Formal negotiations on Turkey's accession to the EU started in 2005. Over the past three years, the parties have not considered any new technical issue. To date, Turkey has managed to conclude the negotiations in regards to only one point.
