More than 25,000 people have died from extreme heat across Europe, AzerNEWS reports, citing Bloomberg.

The report, citing data from government authorities and research institutions in Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, said the number of heat-related deaths in the region has exceeded 25,000.

Germany has recorded the highest death toll. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 11,900 people have died from heat-related causes in the country since April.

The report also noted that all major cities in Italy will be placed on high alert due to extreme temperatures as authorities prepare for continued hot weather.

High day and night temperatures, along with humidity, can weigh on vulnerable people’s health. Exposure to heat can lead to dizziness, nausea and cramps, which can cause heat strokes and even death.

Excess heat deaths are estimated by comparing mortality during a given period with historical averages for previous years.

Climate change is driving up temperatures around the world - but particularly in Europe. It is the fastest warming continent, heating up twice as fast as the global average, according to the Copernicus climate service.
