Azerbaijan, Iran eye military cooperation

Azerbaijani Defense Minister, Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov met with Mohsun Pakayin, Iranian ambassador to the country, Defense Minisrtry reported.

Highlighting the role of the heads of states in development of the Azerbaijan-Iran relations, the sides stated that military cooperation continues successfully.

The sides discussed the prospects of relations, as well as exchanged views on the issues such as holding joint trainings and participation of naval forces of the two countries in the Caspian Sea, organization of the mutual friendship visits of military ships, working meetings of experts in different directions, exchange of experience.

Military attaché, Colonel of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran Amir Moez Faraji took part at the meeting.

Azerbaijan and Iran have shared diplomatic relations since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, and diplomatic ties between the two countries were reestablished in 1992.

Currently, the two countries are focusing on expanding economic ties in various fields, including industry, agriculture, energy, alternative energy, and transportation.

During the first half of 2015, Iran's exports to Azerbaijan decreased by 55.36 percent to reach $42.52 million year-on-year. Azerbaijan's exports to Iran also decreased by 67.11 percent to $11.16 million during the same period.
