Cambodia ties important to Azerbaijan: ambassador

By Sara Rajabova

Azerbaijani ambassador to the Cambodian Kingdom presented his credentials to King Norodom Sihamoni.

Anar Imanov also conveyed the greetings and best wishes of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to the Cambodian King, AzerTag news agency reported.

Imanov said Azerbaijan attached great importance to developing bilateral ties with Cambodia, stressing that there was great potential for future cooperation.

He said he would put all his time and efforts into strengthening bilateral ties.

The Cambodian King asked the ambassador to extend his best regards and greetings to the Azerbaijan President, and said Cambodia was interested in continuing cooperation with Azerbaijan in a variety of areas.

Imanov also spoke about Azerbaijan-Cambodia relations and highlighted Azerbaijan`s socio-economic achievements and the consequences of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, the Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions.

Imanov praised Cambodia`s support for Azerbaijan's "fair cause" in international organizations.

Bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Cambodia increased in recent times. In early April, a delegation headed by Cambodian Secretary of State Uch Borit visited Azerbaijan.

During the meeting with Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov, the sides discussed organizing mutual visits and expanding legal frameworks.
