By Aynur Jafarova

Azerbaijan plans to pass a new law on the protection of the president's honor and dignity at the fall session of the Milli Majlis (parliament), First Vice-Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov told journalists on October 4.

According to Asgarov, the draft law will be prepared in the near future and after passing a certain expertise it will be put on discussion in the legislature.

Asgarov believes that there is a serious need for this law.

"The people elect the president and grant him the highest authority. Therefore, the protection of his honor and dignity is very important. It is also necessary to take into account that Article 106 of the Constitution requires this," he said.

Asgarov said further that he personally oversees the process of developing the draft law.

According to him, the law, developed on the basis of the mentioned constitutional article, will be called "On the protection of the honor and dignity of the President of Azerbaijan."

In late September, Asgarov said while commenting on the debates held ahead of the October 9 presidential elections that Azerbaijan needs to adopt such a law.
