Huge Azeri flag shook by wind, damage prevented
BAKU – The pole of Azerbaijan’s national flag downtown Baku, the tallest one in the world, was shivered by powerful wind in the early hours on Wednesday.
Service personnel urgently carried out work to prevent fluctuations and ensure public safety. The shivers, reported at 3 a.m., were eliminated in three and a half hours, according to the emergencies ministry.
The Azerbaijani flag is 70 meters by 35 meters long and weighs a staggering 350 kilograms. The pole where the flag waves is 162 meters high. The entire structure weighs a total of 220 tons.
President Ilham Aliyev signed decrees on creating the National Flag Square in Baku in November 2007 and on scheduling the National Flag Day in November 2009. Thus, November 9 is marked across Azerbaijan as the National Flag Day every year.
The project on creating the huge flag was developed by US Trident Support company and executed by Azerbaijan’s Azenko company.
The Guinness World Records organization confirmed in May 2010 that the pole where the Azerbaijani national flag is hoisted is the tallest one in the world.
